Survey for Healthy Living in Dekalb - Participants Needed!

In partnership with the Live Healthy DeKalb Coalition, the DeKalb County
Board of Health, OneDeKalb, and Georgia State University, we are
conducting an initiative to identify concerns of residents living in
DeKalb County. We are conducting the Mobilizing Action through Planning
and Partnerships (MAPP) process.

The first stages of the process is to recruit residents of DeKalb County
to complete a short survey that takes only 15 minutes
(www.studyneighborhoods.com) that inquires about conditions in their
neighborhood. This information will be used in combination with focus
groups and other community assessment measures to develop action plans
to improve the condition of neighborhoods and the health of residents!

Responses to the survey will be used to identify the chief concerns of
residents and to develop a community health improvement plan. The survey
asks questions about negative conditions in residents' neighborhood,
such as crime and abandoned buildings, and the presence of assets in
their neighborhood, such as sidewalks, parks, and groceries with fresh
foods. Finally, the survey will also ask some general questions about
participants' health, background, and availability of suitable
healthcare facilities.

To participate, simply go to the following site:

Midvale will not close!

On Tuesday March 23, the Citizens Planning Task Force eliminated Midvale from their list of schools under consideration for closure! They decided that due to inadequate open seats in the other elementary schools in the Tucker High cluster, Midvale could not be closed.

A big thank you to all of our community members who attended meetings, signed petitions, wrote our school board members and otherwise supported Midvale through this crisis!

Good News About Tucker Schools

I don't know how many of you have seen this article in today's paper.

I know that it is about Buckhead schools, but I wanted to point out that the program that is helping those schools become so popular and so FULL that they are having to build a new high school is the International Baccalaureate
Program. In that cluster of schools, they are offering K-12 IB and it is keeping the kids in the public school system when they used to go to private.

DID YOU KNOW...that we have the same thing right here in Tucker? Midvale Elementary, Tucker Middle, and Tucker High are all offering an IB education for OUR kids (Tucker Middle is still in the process of acquiring its IB accreditation but will be a full IB school soon). As the AJC article states, the Buckhead schools are "one of only a handful in the nation to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade." Tucker is then also "one of only a handful in the nation". Definitely something to be proud of!

Save Midvale Elementary!!

As many of you know, Midvale Elementary was placed on a list of possible school closures last Friday. Dekalb County Board of Education is going to close 4 schools at the end of this school year and the announcement is going to come as soon as this Friday.

Midvale is an excellent school in an amazing community. We are surprised to be on this list because Midvale has so much going for it. We are an International Baccalaureate School in the primary years which is part of a continuum running through Tucker Middle School and Tucker High School. The county has also just started a big renovation project including roof, HVAC replacement, and renovations of the downstairs level.

If you want to help, write a letter to the Board of Education contacts that are at the bottom of this e-mail. We want Midvale to be taken OFF this list.

6,250 TABS SAVED FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSES
I cannot thank those of you who saved these tabs, enough. I was so very proud to be able to hand them in on January 28, 2010. I took two gallon size plastic bags filled to the top with tabs, and they were heavy! It is amazing how much all those little tabs, combined, can weigh.

My goal was to have 5,000 tabs by that Thursday, and thanks to many members, that goal was met and then some. My sincere appreciation to you all for your help.

For those of you who did not get an opportunity to participate – this is an on-going project of the DeKalb Federation and the Garden Club of Georgia. I have gotten so used to saving those tabs that I will continue to do so – how about joining me? Just maybe we could raise our goal to 800 or even 1,000. Those metal pull tabs seem rather insignificant, by themselves, but when put together they make a big difference to those who manage the Ronald McDonald Houses.

VALENTINES FOR VETERANS & NEIGHBORHOOD SENIORS/SHUT-INS
Many Thanks to those who made some really special Valentines for the Veterans, Neighborhood Seniors and Shut-Ins. They were hand-made with caring messages, on each one, and will mean so very much to those who receive them. What a meaningful and memorable Valentine’s Day it will be for these individuals.

February Environmental Report

February is the last of our gray winter months. Here are some interesting activities to tempt you to get outside or in touch with the environment.

The Great Backyard Bird Count
Feb12-15 Get out your paper and pencil list the birds you see from your window. If the weather permits sit in your backyard. Go on line to report your count. www.birdcount.org. This effort is spearheaded by Cornell University and Audubon Society. While it may seem a small effort this citizen reporting over the years has yielded much data that is important for the knowledge of birds—their numbers and where they migrate and when. All of the data gathered when added together really makes a difference. The web site is easy to use and a lot of fun. North Carolina had more participating than Georgia last year—please send in your report show that we care also.

Richard Louv, the author of
Last Child in the Woods,
will give a lecture at the Arthur Blank Family Foundation 6-7:30pm February 16th. This is in Atlanta and free but you must get registered. However, it will be web cast so one can watch from home. I found this book at the Novel Experience bookstore on the square in Zebulon while I was at the Environmental Studies School. He has many different things to say but in brief—he finds that childhood experiences no longer take place outside in unstructured play. Studies have begun to document that this is detrimental to proper development both mentally and physically and may have a role in the rise of childhood depression.

Georgia State Parks encourage bicycling-- www.GeorgiaStateParks.org/muddyspokes
. Earn a T-shirt. The Charlie Elliott center in Mansfield offers trails for horseback riding, biking and hiking. Find a way to get yourself, your children and grandchildren out and enjoying our state parks. If they are online encourage the Georgia Department of Natural Resources web site and sign up for the e-news sent out each month. This month the articles include: saving the endangered rattle bush, manatees and turtles in the cold, bird nesting boxes and much more.

The Georgia Urban Forestry Council
sponsors many tree related workshops all over the state. Check the web site there may be something you or your community needs. Remember ARBOR DAY—plant a tree this month.

Georgia Iris Society Meeting

Greater Atlanta Begonia Society Meeting

The Greater Atlanta Begonia Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, January 30, 2010 at Hastings Nature and Garden Center, 3920 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30319.

Call Hastings at 404-869-7447 for directions.

The program will be presented by Doug Jensen from the greenhouse at Cave Springs, Georgia. He will bring examples of the begonias he is growing.

The Greater Atlanta Begonia Society is an affiliate member of the Garden Club of Georgia.

Improved Cultivars

The following is sent on behalf of Redbud District Improved Cultivars Chairman Vickey Cooper.

Winter is definitely upon us! But we can think spring and explore new plant possibilities. Do you have an area in the garden you would like to try something different? Then I have some new ideas for you.

As you look over your plant catalogs, look for this exciting plant. Zahara Starlight Rose Zinnia is an All America Selection winner. The rose and white bicolor blooms will brighten up your garden. Zahara resists leaf spot and mildew and is heat and drought tolerant. Mature plants are 12 to 14 inches tall and wide. Think about adding Zahara to those large containers for the patio or plant Zahara in the front of the landscape border.

Another fun plant to look for is Heatwave Glimmer Sage. The tall blooms are white and especially good for contrast in the garden. Heatwave has a longer bloom time and quickly reblooms from spring until frost. Plants are disease resistant and drought tolerant. Try Heatwave in perennial borders and patio containers. You will find these plants to be fast-growing. Mature plants reach 30 inches in height and 36 inches in width.

Garden Club of Georgia Legislation

The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc.
Mission: Beautification … Conservation … Education
Legislation & Governmental Affairs: Mary Lovings, Chairman; Marian Hill, Advisor; Helen Grogan and Johnnie Berry, Committee Club Representatives

Thank you; THANK YOU to all who contacted their Legislators from home on Monday. Thank you; THANK YOU to all who came to the Capitol Monday with its quirky sense of time and action and who weren't rattled by the process and procedures they encountered there. That there were 50+ of us there, especially on an extremely cold day, made a significant statement. Thank you, THANK YOU, Betty Grimes, for leading us and being there with us and to Sara Lanier and to Joy Stuart for their sustained supportiveness ofthe garden we call Georgia. Thank you, Marian Hill and Helen Grogan for your help and support and for being there.

What was especially important was that most of us who came to the Capitol hadn't been there before. The effort spreads. Members came from across Georgia including Atlanta, Gainesville, Macon, Decatur, St. Simons Island, Stone Mountain, Augusta, Avondale Estates, Hiawassee, Sandy Springs, Rochelle, and Milledgeville. Great going, everyone, for helping to Flourish Our Future! The " .... Conservation ..." part of the GCG Mission continues. The air and water and trees and wildlife can't speak for themselves: GCG can and does speak for conservation. As Dr. Seuss wrote,"I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues." GCG will need to continue to speak for conservation and to speak for it often and from everywhere in the state. Atmosphere at the Capitol is changing, and a fresh breeze is flowing along its halls and into its chambers. A new House Speaker and Speaker Pro Tem as well as a new Majority Whip who are willing to listen are welcomed.

GCG's since 1928 effort to plant trees and reduce the number of billboards will continue until Georgia's General Assembly realizes the importance of pines and butterflies and air and rabbits and soil and native wildflowers and rivers. If you don't remember GCG's FLOW~, use http://coastgis.marsci.uga.edu/summit/whatbasin.htm as a starting point and move ahead to our partner Georgia River Network http://www.garivers.org/garivers/river_info.html.

Georgia has to be a prime target for those who want to remove beneficial trees.
It's the largest state east of the MIssissippi;
It has three major Interstate Highways that run through it: !-20, I-85, and !-95, and that's a lot of right of way territory to be used.
It has what has been an outdoor advertising dream - a General Assembly that allows unlimited gifts to its members.
Among the many migratory birds that head to Florida for the Winter and then back North in the Spring are the snowbirds that pass along Georgia highways, stopping along the way for rest and food, to replenish their supplies, and to see the sights in a state with mountains, a rolling piedmont, coastal plains and marshes, and a glorious seashore.
Those who understand the benefits of trees on highway rights of way have been successful for three consecutive years. Those who want to remove the trees to use public land for private profit try to convince those with a 3-O winning record to compromise. To continue with words from another classic children's book with a message so simple that even an adult can understand it, "Curiouser and curiouser."
Wednesday, I attended a meeting of those who try to protect Georgia's waters - more on that later and separately. Thursday, I talked with Becky Kelly, State Parks and Historic Sites Director, who appreciates our support of and becoming Friends of State Parks; she and I have known and respected the work of each other since 1978.

The General Assembly will be in recess next week for the MLK birthday and to work on the budget. If anyone took a photo of the group in the House Gallery, please email or post it to me and to Victoria Chandler for Garden Gateways. Please also send Victoria and me your photos of GCG members at the Capitol. I've discovered at least one GCG member who arrived a bit late and who therefore did not get a ticket for the Halcyon box drawing. If there are others, please let me know ASAP.

Most appreciatively,

Mary Lovings
