The program for our joint meeting will be presented by Z. Ganaway, National Garden Club Environmental Consultant.  Her topic will be "Wildflowers, Wild Thing I Think I Love You.” Z. has presented programs on various topics in the past to our club.  She is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker.

Let's have a good attendance at the meeting!  

Ways and Means Update

Don't forget that our Neighborhood Directory is our primary fund-raising project to sustain the club for the next two years!  Thanks to those of you who have already supported this important project by collecting directory information and selling directories, as well as those who have already submitted ad sales.  We have sold ads for the inside front cover, the outside back cover and the inside back cover and additional ads are trickling in.  As expected, some of our previous advertisers are unable to advertise with us this year, so please think about the community businesses you patronize and consider asking if they would be willing to advertise with us. If you carry your directory with you in your car, I'll bet you will have many chances to show it to prospective advertisers this week!  Please submit ad sales with checks to Sylvia Bell by May 1 in order to ensure that we can print and deliver the new directories in a timely manner.  Thanks again to everyone for the help with this project!

Community Interest Update

Our ladies contributed $86 at the April meetings to be used in buying gifts for Mother's Day for the women at the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.  This month Anna Lindberg and Betty Schulte will be purchasing the gifts and delivering them to the shelter for the children to choose gifts to give to their mothers on Mother's Day.  Thank you ladies for your participation in this wonderful project.  

DeKalb Federation of Garden Clubs News

At 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Callanwolde, The DeKalb Federation will have a program titled "Design for Miss Daisy."  It will be a panel discussion and demonstration by Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judges on Preparing Designs and Horticulture for the September Yellow Daisy Flower Show.   Garden Club Presidents will also be recognized during the meeting and a lunch will be provided by the Federation Board.
 
A jewelry sale, proceeds of which will go to the Garden Center, will be held on that same date. If you have any jewelry  that you would like to donate to the sale, please contact me at 770-491-3339, and I will be glad to come and pick it up.   Last year I purchased a beautiful necklace and earrings, created of  crystal beads, for my mother and she told me that wearing them brought back many special memories of her own mother.  Remember that old saying, "One person's junk is another one's treasure."  Just maybe, you might have something that will become a special treasure for another.

Another Great Restaurant Find in Tucker

I just have to share about a new restaurant my husband and I have discovered in Tucker: Mai Thai. Located in the Ingles shopping center at the corner Hugh Howell and Lawrenceville Highway, you could drive right by this unassuming restaurant if you weren't looking for it. It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside is a cozy hideaway with very cute decor and wonderful food. 

We ate lunch at Mai Thai today, and it was delicious and - best of all -a great deal! Everything on their lunch menu is only $6.95 and includes a tasty soup and a spring roll. What a bargain! That's almost the same price as fast food, but SO much better. I had the masaman curry and my husband had the pad Thai. Both dishes were full of flavor and the portions were big enough to take home leftovers. 

Restaurants like Mai Thai are one of the many reasons we love living in Tucker. There are so many great little hidden away places like this restaurant. Next time you're out and about, remember to stop in and patronize one of our many fabulous local dining establishments! 

April Program

The program for our April meetings will be presented by Michelle Musicer Debowsky. Her topic will be “Creative Memories Scrap Booking.” Michelle grew up living at 2349 Crestcliff Drive and now lives there with her husband and two children. Her program should be very interesting and fun. Hope we have a good turn-out.

April Community Interest

The April community interest project will be for the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children. Sonsors are Anna Lindberg and Bette Shulte. They will prepare gift bags for the children to give to their mothers for Mother’s Day. This year they have decided to do identical gift items so members can participate by giving a donation of $1 or $2 at the April meeting. Look for a donation box or give your money to Pat or Kay.

April Field Trip

We hope you will join us on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 for a trip to Madison, GA. We plan to visit the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum, which has the largest collection of microcars from the 40s and 50s. The cars are from Germany, Spain and the U.S. The cost of the tour is $5. We also plan to tour the Rogers House and Rose Cottage, historical homes built in 1809. The cost of this tour is $3. We will have lunch at a Madison restaurant and charge a small fee for gas for the trip. We plan to meet at Winding Vista at 9:00 a.m. and return home by 5:00 p.m. If you can join us, please sign up at the April meeting or call one of us.

volunteer time to a good cause.

Plant Swap and Share

The Tucker Historical Society Plant Swap and Share is Saturday, April 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It's held in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Tucker. It's a great event and ushers in spring to Tucker. Volunteers are needed to help out. Drop us an email if interested at tuckerhistoricalsociety@gmail.com.

Plates and Punch Cups

The WWGC owns 25 glass plates and punch cups. They can be used for any garden club function or personal use. They are kept at Marsha Pittard's house. Just give her a call if you want to use them.

DeKalb Federation of Garden Clubs News

Awards Luncheon
On Thursday, March 26, 2009, the DeKalb Federation Awards Luncheon was held at Callanwolde and Winding Woods Garden Club received two awards. One for Perfect Attendance at the Federation meetings and a Certificate of Excellence based on the President’s year end report.

On Thursday, April 23, 2009, The DeKalb Federation will hold its General Meeting and Plant Sale at Callanwolde. If any of you have plants you would like to donate to the sale, please give me, or Libby, a call by Friday, April 19, 2009. The program that day is titled “Feel the Good Earth – The Art of Composting & Soil Care.” A Lecture Demonstration by Master Gardener Dr. Jim Spotts, Soil Scientist, President, Southeastern Environmental Consultants.

Thursday, May 28, 2009 will be the DeKalb Federation General Meeting and Presidents Coffee at Callanwolde. (Club Presidents Recognition.)


A New Look for Callanwolde
Wednesday, April 1, 2009 was the Grand Opening day of the newly restored Pool House (named the Samuel A. Goldman Retreat) and the renovated Formal Gardens and the new Outdoor Amphitheater at Callanwolde.

There are now walking paths that wind through the formal gardens enabling everyone to fully enjoy the breathtaking beauty of this amazing restoration. I have seen it and it is truly magnificent.

Notebook Pickup

If you did not receive your new 2009-2010 notebook pages at the installation dinner, or from a friend or neighbor who picked your pages up at the dinner, they will be available at the April meetings. Please initial next to your name on the pink pages located in the pick up box to confirm that you have received your new notebook pages. If you cannot pick up your notebook pages at the April meetings, please let me know and I can coordinate getting them to you.
